Here's something use.perl commons will probably like, from an interview with Rob Pike (on slashdot):

Given the nature of current operating systems and applications, do you think the idea of "one tool doing one job well" has been abandoned? If so, do you think a return to this model would help bring some innovation back to software development?

Pike: Those days are dead and gone and the eulogy was delivered by Perl.

So true :-)

Just 4 years ago, in my advanced programming class, we spent a couple of weeks learing C-Shell, and Unix tools. The idea was learning how to complete various tasks using C-SH, piping various tools like grep, cut, sed, tee, etc.

I don't know if the Uni still teaches it, but I wouldn't touch it with a stick now. Perl is the way.
