Today I was very annoyed to see my domain down for more than half an hour. This is not the first time I notice such a thing, and since I don't interact with the website regularly this makes me very wary of its actual uptime. I contacted Bluehost's live chat; the support person was nice but he couldn't help besides verifying that the server is down and that it usually takes 15-45 minutes for their sys-admins to solve these. When I told him it's not the first time I've been having such problems and asked what can be done, the answer was sort of "you can't do anything about it, we're trying hard, sorry".

Well, I'm starting to get tired of this. So I've set up a simple monitoring rig that should sample the site's availability every once in a while and collect statistics. If I see the uptime is too bad, I'm going to be very angry.

In other words...

P.S. A bit later while running into another problem (inability to access HTTPS from the server) I spoke to Bluehost's support again. Turns out the server is under a DDoS. OK, tough, I understand, but still... Can't hosting companies provide many 9s uptime if they really want to? I mean, it's just a matter of the resources they invest in these things, right?
