Bird-watching in Agmon Ha-Hula
December 18th, 2008 at 5:51 pmAgmon Ha-Hula is a really cool place. Millions of birds pass through it annually on their way from Europe to Africa and back, some of them staying in Israel for the winter (to the great pleasure of tourists and travelers and displeasure of local farmers). Located in the north-east of Israel, it’s only a 1:20 hour drive away from Haifa. It is recommended to go there on a week-day, because on weekends and holidays it can get pretty crowded.
Today we went there for the 3rd (or 4th?) time, this time with a clear intention for actually watching birds. Though it wasn’t the best time of the year (a month ago there were much more birds, we were told), we still got to see quite a few, especially since we rented binoculars.
Seriously, binoculars is a must for Ha-Hula. It’s a whole different experience with them, and you really get to see much, much more. Even with relatively simple binoculars, you’ll get too see lots of birds really up-close, which is much more fun than just seeing them from far away.
Here’s Anna watching birds (mostly gray cranes) from the quadricycle we’ve also rented:
Renting bicycles is a fun alternative to walking around the Agmon, by the way.
Here’s a flock of cranes that flew right above us:
Except cranes, we’ve also seen herons, egrets (alba) big and small, and many kinds of small birds. There are also cute little nutrias all around the place:
