Climbing Mount Tabor

October 2nd, 2007 at 5:03 pm

Today we used the Sukkot vacation for a nice hike on Mount Tabor. We left our car in the parking lot at the end of the Shibli village, and went up on foot, following the green trail (which is intermixed with the red-blue-white Israel National Trail).

The trail climbs steeply to the top of the mountain - it took us a little longer than an hour to get there. Good boots are recommended, since it’s slippery at some places. Close to the end you should join the black trail until the road which goes inside the Church of Transfiguration, where Jesus Christ allegedly had the Transfiguration event. The church is very impressive and is popular with Christian tourists. Note that it is closed between 11:45 and 14:00 every day, probably for mid-day prayers of the friars.

In addition to visiting the church, you can also walk the black trail that goes around the top (an easy stroll with a great view on clear days).

We went back down on the road; took about 45 minutes. On the way we saw a paragliding launch platform. Looks very cool, we should definitely do it some time.
