Gear for the vacation
November 14th, 2006 at 11:39 pmFor our last long trekking vacation (Nepal in October 2005) we purchased a pair of good boots each (North Face for Anna, Asolo for me). However, we still didn’t have backpacks and borrowed from friends. This time we decided to invest in backpacks of our own. Plus, we have to take sleeping bags with us, and having only one in usable condition we wanted to buy another. So today we finally did it, and bought the gear.
The chosen backpacks are Deuter Quantum 55 + 10 for Anna:

Anna loved this backpack from the first moment she put it on - it is very comfortable, with great support for the back. It also has a few nice features - like a detachable day-pack and a full transport cover hidden in the lowest compartment. The only seeming downside is that the lower compartment seems to be quite small and I’m not sure how a sleeping bag can be squeezed into it. However, since the backpack also has a full front-opening (suitcase-like), it shouldn’t be a problem.
For me we got Deuter Aircontact 65 + 10:

It’s pretty big with a lot of useful features. For instance, it has convenient inner pockets on the sides, an integrated rain cover and a shielded opening for a water pipe (from a water bag). Additionally, it has pretty big side-pockets. It’s also quite roomy, which is important.
In addition we got a warm sleeping bag - Mountain Eagle Comfort, with -5°C comfort and -13°C extreme ratings.
All in all we paid 2100 NIS for this, which is about $490. Not cheap, but you’ve got to pay well for good stuff.
