evolution and BMI, or why slim is attractive

June 26th, 2005 at 10:14 am

It’s not a secret that fat people are less attractive than *normal* weight people. As most of our emotions, attraction is a result of evolution.

I’ve recently read that people with BMI (Body Mass Index, (Weight in kg) divided by (height in meters) ^ 2) between 19 and 22 suffer from less serious diseases, and live longer than people with other BMIs. (*) Incidentally, people with such BMIs are also considered most attractive.

Incidentally, yeah… Can’t fool “mother nature” !

(*) It’s not as crisp, of course, BMI up to 25 is considered healthy, below 18 it’s under-weight, and people with 30+ are obese and statistically have 50 to 150 percent higher chance to suffer serious diseases and death.
