ramblings
August 29th, 2003 at 2:08 pmThe ADSL connection works fine so far. The average download speed from websites is about 80 KB per sec, which is excellent (hey, I’m used to a modem at home !). Downloads from Kazaa are not too bad either.
It’s time to worry for security of the PC. I’ve installed ZoneAlarm, which is a little paranoid, but works satisfactorily. It even made friends with Kazaa and they don’t argue any more. I’ve also downloaded and used AdAware to cleanup spies and trojans, which actually lowered the memory usage a bit. The next step is find time to install all Windows XP patches and updates.
As the PC is now turned on 24 hr a day, I started worrying about its power consumption.
On to a completely other topic: I told them (at work), I told them we should write this tool on our own. The tool is … cpp, yes the C Pre-Processor. Why write on our own ? Well, we can’t use the GNU one due to legal problems (our $#%#$% lawyers don’t like GPL), and another CPP, a free version we downloaded, was written in 84′, K&R style of C, abhorrent coding. It doesn’t support all features we need (we don’t actually use cpp for C code, but rather for a home-brew language).
Ahh… I don’t want to implement big features in such a bad code… We must rewrite it from scratch, to match our own needs !!!
